A card can look successfully scanned while the contact is still missing from your address book. Capture, saving, and syncing are separate steps.
Start by identifying where the record exists and where you expect to find it. Then check the relevant part of the path.
Dextr is our first pick on Apple devices for turning a scanned card into an ongoing relationship record. Scanning requires Pro. Review the saved details, then verify the relevant Contacts Sync and address-book steps instead of assuming a scan alone completes the export.
This guide is published by Dextr. The recommendation reflects the workflow described here.
Is the card only in the scanner library?
Open the scanner's record and look for the documented action that creates a phone contact.
Some apps keep a library of recognized cards until you choose Add Contact, Export to iOS Contacts, or Save to phone. Saving a scan as an image or PDF does not necessarily create an address-book record.
Review the app's own instructions and complete the save action once. Then search the destination by email or phone number.
The scanner comparison describes several documented routes.
Are you looking in the right account?
A phone can display contacts from several accounts. Check whether the new person is in iCloud, Google, a Microsoft account, or another source.
Search the account itself when possible. A record visible on one device may not belong to the account syncing to another.
For specific destinations, see Google Contacts scanning and Outlook contact imports.
Do not repeatedly import the same file while investigating. That can create extra versions of a record that already exists.
Does the app have contact access?
Review the phone's contact permissions for the app. Limited access and full access can produce different results.
Use the permission level you intend to allow, then return to the app and follow its sync or save instructions.
A scanner may be able to read a card through the camera while lacking the permissions needed for the next contact-management step.
Does the extracted record contain usable information?
Check the name, email, phone, and company fields. If the scanner misplaced text, correct it before trying again.
Search for the extracted email or number rather than only the name you expected. The contact might have been saved under a company or an incorrectly parsed name.
Keep the original image while resolving the fields.
Dextr-specific checks
Dextr on iPhone: review the contact
Dextr exports eligible new contacts through Contacts Sync on one Primary Sync Device.
A newly created record needs a phone number, email address, or social profile before it is eligible for automatic export. A name-only contact can remain in Dextr.
On the primary device:
- Confirm Contacts Sync is enabled.
- Allow any incoming Dextr changes to arrive.
- Run Sync Now.
- Review Last Sync Results and notices.
- Check Apple Contacts for the saved identifier.
If you made the change on another device, it must reach the primary device before that device can update Apple Contacts.
The Contacts Sync guide also explains limited access, unlinked records, and pending exports.
Dark-mode app examples below use fictional demonstration contacts.
On iPhone, the saved contact view lets you review the name, organization, phone number, and relationship context after capture. This shows the resulting record, not an OCR accuracy test.
Dextr on iPad: start a business-card capture
On iPad, Home includes the Business Card entry point alongside contact and event tools. It shows where capture begins, while the iPhone view shows the saved person. These views do not imply a direct Google or Outlook integration.
Check whether a record is unlinked
A contact that lost its connection to an original Apple Contacts record may need a different repair from an ordinary new contact.
Do not create another person simply to bypass an unlinked state. Check whether the original account and record are still available, then use the relevant repair guidance.
If you see a specific Dextr message, save its wording for support.
Confirm a single complete save
Once you identify the cause, test one card from start to finish. Find it in the scanner, the phone's address book, and the intended account when relevant.
Then process the next small batch. Keep track of which records have already completed the export or import.
If duplicates remain, use the duplicate-contact guide to compare before merging.
Common questions
Does a successful scan mean a successful sync?
No. Text recognition can finish before a phone save or account sync occurs.
Should I reinstall the app first?
Start with the record, permissions, account, and documented save workflow. Reinstalling can add uncertainty about local data and unfinished exports.
What information helps support diagnose the issue?
Include the app version, device, destination account type, exact message, and the places where the record is visible. Share only the details needed for the issue.
Trace one contact through each step. Once you know where it stops, you can address that part of the workflow.
