A scanned business card is useful when the person reaches the Google address book you actually use. A record visible in a scanning app or in the iPhone's combined Contacts list may still belong somewhere else.
There are two practical routes: save through a phone workflow that writes to your Google account, or export contact data and import it into Google Contacts.
Dextr is our first pick on Apple devices for turning a scanned card into an ongoing relationship record. Scanning requires Pro. Review the saved details, then verify the relevant Contacts Sync and address-book steps instead of assuming a scan alone completes the export.
This guide is published by Dextr. The recommendation reflects the workflow described here.
Route one: save through a connected Google account
On iPhone, make your Google account's contacts available using Google's iPhone sync instructions. Review the account in the iPhone's Contacts settings.
Apple also documents selecting a default account for new contacts in its account guide.
Next, choose a scanner with a documented save to iOS Contacts. Doc Scan, for example, describes reviewing extracted fields and selecting Export to iOS Contacts.
The important check is the result. Save one card, then sign in to the intended account at Google Contacts and search for the person. An app can have its own account behavior, so a default setting alone is not proof of the destination.
Route two: import a contact file
Choose a scanner that exports contact data in CSV or vCard format. A PDF or photograph of the card is a different kind of file and does not become contact fields through this import.
Google's official import instructions support CSV and vCard files:
- Open Google Contacts on a computer in the intended account.
- Choose Import.
- Select the contact file.
- Complete the import.
- Open a sample person and check the saved fields.
If a scanner offers several export formats, choose one intended for Google Contacts when available. Inspect a small export before importing a large collection.
Check the fields before scaling up
Use a card with a name, company, email, and phone number for your first test. Check that the person and company have not been reversed.
Look closely at international prefixes, multiple email addresses, and names with accents. Review notes if an imported detail is not where you expected it.
Keep phone numbers as complete strings when preparing a CSV. A spreadsheet can alter leading zeros or long numbers if it interprets them as ordinary numeric values.
For custom CSV preparation, use Google's documented template and preserve its headers rather than inventing column names.
Where Dextr fits
Dextr on iPhone: review the contact
Dextr's Contacts Sync connects with Apple Contacts on one Primary Sync Device. It does not independently sign in to a Google account.
If Google contacts are available through Apple Contacts, Dextr can work with the records available to it, subject to permissions. For newly scanned Dextr records, verify the destination of an exported test contact before assuming it reached Google.
The Dextr Contacts Sync guide explains this distinction.
Dextr's extra relationship context, including introductions and reminders, remains in Dextr. It is not converted into equivalent Google Contacts fields.
Dark-mode app examples below use fictional demonstration contacts.
On iPhone, the saved contact view lets you review the name, organization, phone number, and relationship context after capture. This shows the resulting record, not an OCR accuracy test.
Dextr on iPad: start a business-card capture
On iPad, Home includes the Business Card entry point alongside contact and event tools. It shows where capture begins, while the iPhone view shows the saved person. These views do not imply a direct Google or Outlook integration.
Avoid repeated imports
After a successful trial, process a small batch and inspect the result. Do not repeatedly import the same file because you cannot immediately see a record on another device.
First check the account, search by email, and allow the relevant sync to complete. Importing the same people again can create more cleanup work.
If you already have a contact, compare the new information with the current record. The scanner may contain a newer job title while the address book holds a more current personal number.
Add the meeting context
The card tells you how to reach someone. A short note tells you why you wanted to.
Keep the event, conversation topic, and any promised action with your contact system. If you met several people at a conference, the conference organization guide provides a practical routine.
Common questions
Can I scan a card directly inside Google Contacts?
This guide uses external capture or manual entry followed by a supported save or import route. Check Google's current features before assuming card recognition is built into the address book.
Does seeing a person on my iPhone mean they are in Google?
No. The combined Contacts view can include several accounts. Check the Google account itself.
Can I import the card photograph?
The contact import expects contact data in a supported format. Use the image for reference while checking extracted information.
Choose the destination first, confirm one complete save, and then scan the rest.
