“Contact Maya” is easy to postpone. “Send Maya the workshop outline on Friday” gives you an action you can finish.
On iPhone, choose the reminder according to what you want it to do: alert you on a date, appear during a Messages conversation, or help maintain an ongoing relationship.
Dextr is our first pick on Apple devices for keeping a reason to reconnect beside the relationship history. Set a reminder that reflects a real intention, then review the useful context before reaching out.
This guide is published by Dextr. The recommendation reflects the workflow described here.
For a specific date, use a dated task
In Apple Reminders, create a task with the person's name and the action. Add a date and, when useful, a time through its details.
Include enough context to understand the reminder later. Put the resource, question, or agreed deadline in the notes.
For example: “Send Maya the venue checklist, Friday afternoon.” Once you have sent it, mark the task complete.
A dated task is useful for a promise whether or not you have other contact with the person in the meantime.
For a prompt in Messages, use When Messaging
Apple's reminder details guide describes a When Messaging option.
Open the reminder's details, enable When Messaging, and select the contact. The prompt appears when you next chat with that person in Messages.
This is useful for “Ask Jordan which workshop date works.” It depends on that Messages interaction, so use a dated reminder when the action needs attention by a deadline.
The option is a prompt for you. It is different from scheduling an outgoing message.
For ongoing contact, choose an interval
A fixed calendar task repeats according to its schedule. A relationship reminder may instead use the last recorded interaction and your chosen interval.
In Dextr, Stay in Touch reminders support that ongoing pattern. Calendar reminders support particular dates or repeating calendar schedules.
The Dextr reminder walkthrough explains both. You can have a Stay in Touch reminder and separate dated actions for the same person.
Set up a useful Dextr reminder
Dextr on iPhone: set the next action
Start from Home's Reminder action or the bell tab on the contact profile. Choose the person, write a specific title, and add context.
For an ongoing reminder, choose Stay in Touch and an interval that fits the relationship. For a promise, choose Calendar and set the relevant date and time.
Read the next date before saving. If the contact already has an active Stay in Touch reminder, edit that interval instead of trying to create another.
For a specific task, review Autocomplete on Contact. Turn it off when an unrelated call or text should not count as finishing the promise.
Dark-mode app examples below use fictional demonstration contacts.
On iPhone, a contact-linked reminder includes a title, notes, date, time, and repeat setting.
Dextr on iPad: review relationship history
On iPad, Events & Journal provides a separate view of past occasions and conversation notes. Journal Entries require Pro.
Keep the history accurate
If you want a reminder based on recorded contact, maintain the interactions it uses. A conversation outside the app may need to be added.
Dextr can create a pending interaction when you start a message through it, but opening a messaging app does not prove you sent the message or received a reply.
Review the record and correct it when needed. The texting guide explains the handoff and review.
Choose one reliable place to look
Start with three people or actions. Confirm that notifications are allowed and check the reminders in the place you normally review.
Avoid duplicating the same task across several apps unless each has a clear purpose. Otherwise, completing the task can leave other reminders behind.
For a wider comparison, see keep-in-touch reminder apps.
Common questions
Will the reminder send the message?
The workflows here prompt you to act. Review and send a message in the relevant messaging service yourself.
Why did a reminder appear after I already spoke to the person?
It may use a fixed date or an interaction history that has not been updated. Check its completion rules.
Can I use the same interval for everyone?
You can, but a realistic rhythm depends on your shared routines. Adjust reminders that repeatedly create work you do not intend to do.
Choose a dated task for a promise, a Messages prompt for something to ask during a chat, and an ongoing reminder when you want help maintaining contact.
