How to Scan Business Cards into iPhone Contacts

A paper camera scans a business card into a phone contact.

A business card becomes easier to use when its details are in the address book you already search. The important result is a contact you can call, message, and find later.

On iPhone, you can extract details manually or use a scanner that prepares a contact record. Before scanning a stack, save one card and confirm where it ends up.

Dextr is our first pick on Apple devices for turning a scanned card into an ongoing relationship record. Scanning requires Pro. Review the saved details, then verify the relevant Contacts Sync and address-book steps instead of assuming a scan alone completes the export.

This guide is published by Dextr. The recommendation reflects the workflow described here.

Choose the result you want

A photo or PDF preserves the card image. A contact record puts the person's name, company, phone, and email into fields your address book understands.

Look for a scanner action such as Add Contact, Export to iOS Contacts, or Save to phone. Saving a card inside a scanner's private library may require another step before the person appears in Apple Contacts.

If you use more than one address book, also decide which account should hold the contact. Seeing someone in the iPhone's combined contact list does not, by itself, establish whether the record belongs to iCloud, Google, or another account.

Dextr on iPhone: review the contact

Dextr's business-card scanner requires iOS 26 or later, an eligible device with Apple Intelligence enabled and available, a supported language, and camera access. Check the scanner's access message and current plan requirements.

  1. Open Dextr Home and choose Business Card.
  2. Hold the card flat inside the camera guide.
  3. Keep all printed details visible and avoid glare.
  4. Tap Scan Business Card when text is recognized.
  5. Review the extracted fields in the contact form.
  6. Correct mistakes and save with the checkmark.

The Dextr scanning walkthrough includes illustrated steps.

Check email addresses character by character. Review international phone prefixes, job titles, and whether a company name has landed in the person's name field.

Dark-mode app examples below use fictional demonstration contacts.

On iPhone, the saved contact view lets you review the name, organization, phone number, and relationship context after capture. This shows the resulting record, not an OCR accuracy test.

On iPad, Home includes the Business Card entry point alongside contact and event tools. It shows where capture begins, while the iPhone view shows the saved person. These views do not imply a direct Google or Outlook integration.

Get the saved record into Apple Contacts

Dextr uses Contacts Sync to exchange supported contact details with Apple Contacts through one Primary Sync Device.

A newly created Dextr contact needs a phone number, email address, or social profile before it is eligible for automatic export. A name-only record can remain in Dextr until you add contact information.

On your Primary Sync Device, confirm Contacts Sync is enabled, let the sync finish, and inspect Last Sync Results. Then open Apple Contacts and search for the phone number or email address as well as the name.

The Contacts Sync guide explains setup and the export rules. Dextr-specific tags, relationships, reminders, and First Met context remain in Dextr.

Other ways to create the contact

If you already use Genius Scan, its official business-card instructions describe an iOS text-recognition workflow that leads to Add Contact. Review the feature's plan requirements.

For occasional cards, you can also use available iPhone text-selection tools to copy recognized information into a new contact. Expect to check and place the fields yourself. A readable card photo is still useful while you do that.

Whichever method you choose, confirm the final record in Apple Contacts before scanning the rest.

Check the account and avoid duplicates

Apple lets you manage several contact accounts and select a default account for new contacts. Review Apple's account guidance, and check the saved card in the relevant account's list.

An app can have its own save behavior, so use a test contact to confirm the destination instead of assuming a default setting controls every workflow.

Before saving someone you already know, search for their email or phone number. Update the existing record where the app supports it. If you create a duplicate, compare both records before merging.

Add the context the card leaves out

The printed card usually cannot tell you what you discussed or why you wanted to reconnect. Add a short note such as: “Met at the library workshop. Offered to send the accessibility checklist.”

In Dextr, record the event, place, or introducer, then set a dated reminder for a promise. These details make the saved number easier to use months later.

Common questions

Does scanning automatically put the person in Contacts?

That depends on the app. Some use a separate save action, while Dextr uses its Contacts Sync workflow. Verify the result in the address book.

Will the original card image become the contact?

Not necessarily. Contact fields and the scanned image are separate outputs. Check what the app retains.

What if my iPhone cannot run Dextr's scanner?

Enter the details manually or choose another compatible scanning workflow. You can still save useful relationship context afterward.

Start with one card, check the fields, and find the person in the destination address book. Repeat only after that complete path works.
