Build New Outreach Habits with Dextr Home Screen Widgets

Dextr Staff

You think of someone you have been meaning to call, open your phone, and get pulled into something else. Or you send a quick text, then forget when you last checked in. Good intentions are easy to lose in the small steps between remembering a person and reaching out.

Dextr Home Screen widgets put those people and actions where you already look. A familiar name, a call button, or a reminder on your first screen can turn “I should get in touch” into a small daily habit.

The best place to start is the large Quick Actions widget or Favorites. They make it easy to begin your calls and texts through Dextr, so the app has more useful context about the relationships you are actually maintaining.

A small daily cue can help you turn good intentions into regular outreach.

Why starting in Dextr makes a difference

Dextr gets smarter about your relationships when your outreach becomes part of the picture. Starting a call or text through Dextr gives it a way to record that outgoing interaction with the right person.

That history supports useful everyday features:

  • Remember your last outreach. See when you last initiated contact instead of relying on memory.
  • Keep reminders current. Eligible reminders can complete when you contact the person; Stay in Touch reminders can schedule the next check-in from the interaction.
  • Build on the conversation. Add a useful note afterward, so your next call begins with context.

You still complete the call or message in the chosen calling or messaging app. Dextr records the outreach action; the details of what you discussed come from the notes you choose to add.

Use Dextr as the starting point consistently. Calls or messages begun independently in another app do not give it the same record. A widget makes that choice easier to remember because the Dextr action is right there on your iPhone Home Screen.

For a complete calling walkthrough, see Making Calls Using Dextr. It covers the widget phone buttons, reviewing an outgoing interaction, and adding notes after the conversation.

1. Add a Dextr widget to your iPhone Home Screen

Choose a Home Screen page you see often, ideally the first one. Then:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area until the apps begin to jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit in the upper-left corner.
  3. Choose Add Widget.
  4. Search for Dextr and tap the result.
  5. Swipe through the widget choices and sizes.
  6. Tap Add Widget, position it where you will notice it, and tap Done.

Touch and hold the Home Screen, then choose Edit → Add Widget.

These are the standard iPhone widget controls; Apple’s widget setup guide also covers moving widgets and using stacks.

Start with one widget that makes your next action easier. You can add another later.

2. Use large Quick Actions as your outreach starting point

Choose the large Quick Actions widget when you want a prominent Call / Message button on your Home Screen. Tap it to open Dextr’s contact picker, find the person, and choose the call or message action.

Use Call / Message at the top of large Quick Actions to begin your outreach through Dextr.

Make this your default route whenever you think, “I should text someone.” Keeping the widget near the apps you already reach for gives you a visible cue at the right moment.

Quick Actions also helps you capture relationship details while they are fresh. Its buttons can open a new contact, business card scan, event, reminder, journal entry, or place. The large version adds Call / Message, New Tag, and New Relation Type to the actions available in the medium layout.

If your goal is to start more calls and texts through Dextr, choose the large version.

3. Keep the people who matter close with Favorites

The Favorites widget shows people you have favorited in Dextr, along with call and message buttons for contacts with suitable numbers. Tap a name to open the profile, or use the phone or message button to begin reaching out through Dextr.

Choose a person, then tap their phone or message button. The line beneath the name shows recent recorded outreach.

This is a useful home for a few relationships you want to keep active: a close friend, a family member, a mentor, or a colleague you enjoy working with.

The medium widget shows up to three people; the large one shows up to seven. The widget follows your Favorites list and its order in Dextr. Put the people you want to see first near the top of that list.

When a recent interaction is available, the small line beneath a name gives you a helpful reminder of your latest recorded contact. Read it, choose someone, and take one small action.

If a call or message button is dimmed, open the person in Dextr and check that their contact details include a number suitable for that action.

4. Let Today make the next step visible

The Today widget brings today’s events and due or overdue reminders onto your Home Screen. Use it as a morning prompt: is there someone you promised to contact, or an event you want to prepare for?

Tap a reminder or event to open it in Dextr. Review the context, then use the person’s contact actions when you are ready to reach out.

The medium version shows up to three items and the large version up to seven. When there is room, the widget also offers shortcuts for adding an event or reminder.

A useful reminder names an action: “Send Maya the workshop outline” gives you a clearer starting point than “Follow up.” For an ongoing rhythm, set a Stay in Touch reminder with an interval that fits the relationship.

See How to Set Stay-in-Touch Reminders in Dextr for dated reminders, recurring check-ins, and Autocomplete on Contact.

5. Follow through with people you recently met

A promising introduction is easiest to act on while the conversation is still fresh. The Recently Met widget keeps recent first meetings visible, with names and, in the larger layouts, meeting notes.

Keep twelve recent connections and their meeting notes in view, then open a person to follow through.

Tap a person to open their profile, remind yourself how you met, and use Dextr’s call or message action to continue the conversation.

During a current event, the widget can show that event and the people you have met there. A useful First Met note—“Interested in the October workshop; send the invitation”—gives you a natural reason to follow up.

The large layout can display up to 12 people. Start with the person you promised something to, then work through the others as it makes sense. Our Events guide shows how to connect a gathering, attendees, and conversation notes.

Build a small routine you can repeat

Choose a moment already in your day: after your morning coffee, before closing your laptop, or during a quiet break.

  1. Notice one person. Look at Favorites, Today, or Recently Met.
  2. Start through Dextr. Use the widget’s call or message button, or open the person and contact them from Dextr.
  3. Save one useful detail. Afterward, add a short note about what mattered.
  4. Choose a next step when needed. Set a reminder for a promise or an ongoing check-in.

For example, you see Ada in Favorites and remember that you promised her a workshop invitation. You start a message through the widget, send the details, and later add a note about her response. If she asks you to introduce her to another organizer, give that next step its own reminder.

The widget supplies the cue. Your brief outreach and notes give Dextr better context for the next time. A few consistent check-ins are easier to sustain than waiting until you can catch up with everyone.

For a step-by-step texting walkthrough, see Sending Texts with Dextr. It covers the message buttons, reviewing outreach, and recording the details after a reply.

Keep your history useful

Review the recorded interaction if you cancel an outreach attempt or it does not turn into a conversation. Starting an action is not the same as knowing what was said or whether someone replied.

Add the details you want to remember in a Journal Entry. Journal Entries are part of Dextr Pro. If you already subscribe and see an upgrade prompt, restore your existing subscription.

Open Dextr after changing favorites, contact details, events, or reminders so the widgets can refresh. iOS controls widget refresh timing, so changes may take a moment to appear.
