Old contacts can follow you through years of new phones: a contractor you used once, a number with no name, or people from a project that ended long ago. If you have already decided those records no longer belong in your address book, Dextr gives you a way to review them together and delete their linked Apple Contacts records.
For contacts stored in iCloud, that deletion also syncs to your other devices with iCloud Contacts enabled. This guide walks through the full process: check sync, archive the contacts, select them in the archive, save a backup, and confirm deletion.
Understand what you are deleting
Archive removes a person from your active Dextr list while retaining the record for later. Delete permanently removes their Dextr record and, when linked, their Apple Contacts record. Archiving alone does not delete the contact from iCloud.
Dextr works with the contacts available through Apple Contacts on your device. That address book may include iCloud, Google, Exchange, and other accounts. Check that the people you intend to remove are in your iCloud contact list before selecting them. Deleting a Dextr-only record will not delete a separate, unlinked iCloud contact.
An iCloud deletion is shared across devices that use that account’s iCloud Contacts. Apple explains how contact deletion syncs. If you only want a quieter Dextr list, stop after archiving. If your goal is to stop Dextr’s own cloud sync while keeping your contacts, follow How to Use Dextr Without iCloud. Turning off app sync or removing Dextr’s stored cloud data is different from deleting linked people from Apple Contacts.
If you want to remove Dextr itself while keeping your Apple Contacts library, use How to Permanently Delete All Dextr Data. You do not need to delete linked people inside Dextr as an uninstall step.
1. Check Contacts Sync
In Dextr, open Home → Settings → Contacts Sync. Complete sync setup, make sure Enable Contacts Sync is on, and use your Primary Sync Device if Dextr manages sync on another device. Let any current sync finish before deleting.
Also confirm that iCloud Contacts is enabled in your iPhone’s iCloud settings and that the contacts appear in the iCloud list in Apple Contacts. Dextr’s own iCloud data sync and Apple’s iCloud Contacts are separate: the deletion needs to reach the linked Apple Contacts record to remove it from iCloud.
If setup is incomplete or Dextr cannot access the relevant contacts, follow the Contacts Sync setup guide before continuing.
2. Archive the contacts you want to delete
Tap Contacts in the bottom menu. Open the list you want to review, then tap the checklist icon beside the sort arrows to enter bulk selection. Select the people you no longer need and check the selected count.
Tap the archive box at the bottom right and confirm Archive. This gives you a separate list to review before permanent deletion. If the contacts are already archived, go straight to the next step.

3. Open Archived Contacts
Return to Home, tap the Settings gear at the upper left, and choose Archived Contacts.
Use Search to narrow the archive if needed. Tap the checklist icon at the upper right, beside the sort arrows, to activate bulk selection.
4. Select the records and tap Delete
Tap the selection circles for the contacts you want to permanently remove. You can select one person or several. Use Select All only when you have reviewed everyone in the current list.
Check the count at the top, then tap the trash icon at the bottom right. In this example, 12 archived contacts are selected. The curved arrow in the middle is Restore, which returns archived records to your active list.
5. Export the required VCF backup
Dextr first shows Permanently Delete 12 Contacts, using your actual selected count, and requires a backup before continuing. Tap Export VCF Backup.
In the share sheet, choose Save to Files, select a folder you can find later, and tap Save. The example file is named Deleted Contacts (12).vcf. Save the file successfully rather than simply dismissing the share sheet.
A VCF file preserves exported contact information in a format contact apps can import. It is not a complete backup of Dextr’s relationship history, events, reminders, or other app-specific data. Keep a contact archived if you still need that context.
6. Review the final confirmation
After the backup is saved, Dextr presents a final confirmation. Read the selected count and the permanent-deletion warning. When you are certain, tap Delete From Dextr & Apple Contacts. Choose Cancel if you need to reconsider or change the selection.
Deleting a person also removes associated Dextr data, including their reminder and interaction records. The archive’s Restore action does not undo a permanent deletion.
7. Check the result in iCloud
Allow the operation and iCloud sync to finish, then check the iCloud contact list in Apple Contacts or Contacts on iCloud.com on a tablet or computer. Search for one of the removed records to verify the result before working through another group.
If a contact is still present, check that you deleted the linked record from the right account. A second record for the same person can remain. Also review Dextr’s Contacts Sync settings and any error shown in the app; a record disappearing from Dextr alone does not prove that its iCloud counterpart was removed.
If Delete is unavailable
For the bulk workflow, open Archived Contacts, not the active contact list, and select at least one person. If Dextr uses another Primary Sync Device, perform the deletion there. Resolve Contacts permission or sync-setup prompts, enable Contacts Sync, and wait for an in-progress sync to finish.
Dextr protects your own contact card and its built-in Dextr contact from deletion. For ordinary active records with linked tags, events, relationships, interactions, or reminders, archive them before trying to delete them.
If you deleted the wrong contact
You can import the saved VCF to recover the contact information it contains. Apple also offers Restore Contacts in iCloud Data Recovery when an earlier archive is available. That restores an earlier version of your iCloud contacts, so review Apple’s instructions before using it. It does not restore deleted Dextr-specific history.
